Coming to Nineveh

In June 2014, large territories in Iraq and Syria fell under the control of Islamist extremists, including Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq. We Are Coming, Nineveh! is a tactical and operational-level board game that focuses on the climax of the campaign that ensued: the liberation of West Mosul by Iraqi security forces from February to July 2017.

This game is designed for two players, who can choose to represent either the Iraqi security forces or Daesh (often referred to as ISIS). Players begin by establishing their operational priorities. Once their objectives are set, they then decide which additional capabilities to deploy in the battle. With over forty different options available—including units, weapons, fire support, intelligence, advisors and trainers, and defensive preparations—each session promises a unique experience.

Following the initial setup, players engage in a highly tactical battle for dominance over the streets and neighborhoods of the city. The game employs block and area movement mechanics to simulate the “fog of war,” creating an environment that reflects the complexities of urban combat. A meticulously crafted map illustrates the intricate urban landscape of West Mosul, particularly highlighting the densely populated Old City.

As players navigate the game, they will encounter event cards that can be activated at any moment. These cards introduce tactical scenarios that may present difficult moral dilemmas or result in collateral damage, adding layers of strategy and realism to the gameplay. The game mechanics are designed to be intuitive, ensuring an engaging and immersive experience for the players.
