The new expansion for War of the Ring Second Edition, titled Kings of Middle–Earth, introduces two significant character types: Sovereigns and Dark Chieftains. These characters embody essential figures from Middle-earth who play crucial roles in the War of the Ring.

The Sovereigns, representing the Free Peoples, were prime targets for Sauron’s insidious strategies aimed at warping the resolve of those who opposed him. Utilizing tools like the palantíri (seeing stones) and employing duplicitous emissaries such as Gríma, Sauron sought to manipulate these leaders. To counter these threats, it was vital for the Free Peoples to unify around their compelling leaders, including Brand, Dáin Ironfoot, Denethor, Théoden, and Thranduil, as they stood against the encroaching darkness.

For each of the three Shadow Nations—which include the Black Serpent, the Shadow of Mirkwood, and Uglúk—there is a corresponding Dark Chieftain included in this expansion.

Moreover, the expansion features Hunt tiles and Stronghold tiles, designed for compatibility with both the standard and limited editions of War of the Ring, as well as the War of the Ring Deluxe Game Mat. To engage with Kings of Middle–Earth, players must have a copy of War of the Ring.
